Inside is a film which I can honestly say pleasantly surprised me. As of the last few years, it's no secret that remakes and torture/shock horror films have been the focus of the genre. For example, the fact that The Last House On The Left was remade and Saw VI exists, with another on the way, is proof of that.
Amongst the bombardment of terrible attempts to shock horror fans lies Inside. Inside is a french horror film that shares the same timeline of another great horror film, Frontiers. It takes place in France during a time of rioting, looting and destruction. On Christmas Eve a woman (Sarah) is home alone when she hears a knock on the door, when she answers she learns is someone asking to use her phone because their car has broken down.
Sarah, denies the woman the phone and says her husband is sleeping. However, we know, from the opening that Sarah's husband is dead from a fatal car accident in which Sarah survived. After some talking through the door, the woman appears in the glass door around back. Sarah, a photographer tries to get a shot of the woman, who shatters the glass and disappears.
After the police are called and a check of the house is done, Sarah is left home alone again. Before we know it, the unknown woman is in Sarah's room with scissors to her stomach She's trying to cut Sarah's baby out. From here the film is beyond intense. From here until the end, the film is a nonstop descent into brutality, suspense and mind numbing violence.
For Sarah, the unrelenting attack is seemingly endless, and unfortunately, vengeance is somewhat of a hard task to come across when your covered in blood with your arm through a bathroom door with razor sharp scissors pinning your hand to a wall.
The film is a great tale of survival and doing wahetever's necessary to stay alive. When your life is being threatened, you'll compromise your morality to survive and that's exactly what Sarah does.
Inside's gore is amazingly realistic. It's a real treat to see authentic looking blood and a love for prosthetics that can only be compared to the love for violence in this film. Completely suspenseful, this film never lets up in its intensity. With a strange ambient, noise soundtrack this films only short comings are it's CGI shots of the baby inside Sarah's stomach.
